Laser Welding: select the correct filler wire based on your base metal
Laser welding can often be performed without filler wire, but when you need to bridge gaps (>0.2 mm), join dissimilar metals, or prevent cracking, the filler wire must closely match the base metal's composition.
Select the correct filler wire based on your base metal:
Carbon/Mild Steel: Use ER70S-6 for excellent flowability and strong deoxidation.
Stainless Steel: Use ER308L (general/304 series) or ER316L (corrosive environments/316 series).
Aluminum Alloys:
For 6xxx series (e.g., 6061), use ER4047 or ER4043 to maximize fluidity and prevent solidification cracking.
For 5xxx series (e.g., 5083), use ER5356 or ER5183 to match magnesium content.
Mold & Tool Steel: Use H13 (high wear), P20 (general), or 309L (for buffer/stress-relief layers).
